Post #5: The shackles that appear several times in the novel The Glory Field are used as symbolism in the story. In a short response explain what you believe these shackles symbolize for the Lewis family.
In this story to me the shackles resemble freedom. When Muhammad Bilal was being taken from his home country to work as a slave he was chained up in them. Now that slavery is over it is getting passed down the Lewis family one generation to the next and are a great reminder of what blacks used to have to do and how far they have come.
I believe that the shackles represent what the Lewis Family once was and how far they have come as a family. Since the shackles have not been used and will not be used for anything in the future (hopefully), I believe that the shackles now represent the freedom of the Lewis Family. They've come so far from what they once were and that is a symbol showing the progress.
The shackles in the Lewis Family symbolize all the troubles their family has gone through and will go through throughout their family history. They also represent the triumph that they went through to overcome the imprisonment of the shackles, and their confinement.
I believe these shackles represent the fact that their first ancestor came over in these shackles and gave the Lewis family the Glory Field. They also represent that there is freedom in the world and not every African American has to live behind chains or shackles. They could also be a remembrance that their great ancestor was released from these shackles when he was brought over to Curry Island and lasted the whole way through the trip without dying or giving up hope.
The shackles symbolize the Lewis' story. They started when one boy was captured and taken overseas and ended up equal to everyone else. The generations of the Lewis family have broken the shackles of freedom.
I think that these shackles symbolize how far the Lewis family has come since Muhammad being shipped from Africa. They started off as slaves and laborers and eventually became free and Luvenia even started a huge business. They never quit fighting for their freedom even under harsh conditions and those shackles symbolize their determination and strength through it all. I believe the shackles are something that the Lewis family is prideful of. It shows what they have accomplished and that anything can be done with hard work.
In my opinion, Muhammad's shackles symbolise racism against the Lewises. For example, in the 1964 section, when Tommy handcuffs himself to the sheriff, they are a symbol of the very rights and equality for which he is protesting.
For the Lewis family these shackles are what started it all. Their ancestor Muhammad Bilal was chained in these shackles as he was brought over to America from Africa as a slave. Since then the Lewis family had to face many hardships including getting past slavery. I believe that these shackles symbolize all that the Lewis's had to go through since Muhammad Bilal was brought over and their struggle and wish for freedom. ~Maegan Pete
